Name: GREAT DUCK PIPE
Time: AD 800 - 1400
Location: Moundbuilder Culture, Central USA
The Middle Woodland Indian and Moundbuilder cultures of the Midwestern United States were responsible for creating some of the most interesting and exquisitely carved artifacts of all time, including beautifully crafted effigy pipes. This exact copy of a duck effigy was created to mimic a black stone called steatite (soapstone), commonly found in the central Appalachians and traded throughout the northeast and as far south as the Mississippi delta. The "Great Pipes" like this one, were much larger than the more common tubular or platform style pipes found in burial mound complexes, and often represented animals and birds. While there is evidence to suggest the original pipe had a stem attached to it, its style and length is speculation. Our re-creation of this wonderful artifact reflects the waterfowl theme and brings out the ceremonial aspects of the portrayal of the duck in middle woodland society.
