Name: AZTEC DOG
Time: c. AD 1500
Location: Central Mexico
The dog was frequently represented in Aztec stone sculpture. Unlike serpents and jaguars, both used as cosmic images and found on major monuments, the dog effigies were only found in smaller, more personal sculptures. They were believed to represent guiding spirits and were associated with helping people with their problems and decisions arising in everyday life. It was Aztec belief that the dog led the soul of the dead through the underworld, and a dog was sacrificed at every burial to act as a guide in the afterlife. When the vertebra are exposed in a dog sculpture, it is performing its spiritual function as a leader in the underworld.
