Name: DOUBLE DRAGON RING
Time: c. 1600 - 1100 BC
Location: Shang Dynasty, China
This beautiful and enigmatic ring is an exact reproduction of an original neolithic Chinese piece carved in rare red jade over 3500 years ago. The two facing heads are known as "pig dragons". The pig was both an important and revered animal in Chinese life. It was intelligent, an important source of food, and apparently able to thrive in the harshest conditions. Over time, the form became more sinuous, mimicking reptiles or possibly incorporating stories of giant snake-like skeletons of dinosaurs that travelers saw in the desert. Thus was born the oriental dragon. This ring was an early form of a bi-disc, an outward looking symbol of the cosmos or afterlife which was often placed on the chest at burial. One can interpret the dragons as protective spirits during a persons journey after death. Alternatively, the circularly connected facing dragons may mean that as a person explores the infinite, they must ultimately come face to face with themselves.
