Name: THE BANTRY BOAT
Time: c. AD 600 - 1000
Location: Bantry Bay, Ireland
This unusual figure is carved vertically on the shaft of the ancient Kilnaruane Pillar which stands in a field above Bantry Bay in Ireland. It depicts a curragh, or skin covered boat, with the helmsman urging on four oarsmen as they head heavenwards (or into the unknown) amid a sea of crosses. This accurate depiction of the oarsmen dates back to the Early Christian Era. It may commemorate St. Brendan's famous 6th century voyage. It is believed that St. Brenden with his crew of four set out in just such a boat and may have discovered America 1,000 years before Columbus. It has also been interpreted as depicting the journey of Everyone, sailing across uncharted seas to reach heaven or hell. Alternatively, it can be viewed as a symbol of the Church ferrying it's flock to heaven through seas of adversity. This rendering offers an ancient riddle for each of us to interpret.
