Are those really fiery plumes from the rocket beneath an ancient space traveler? Are his hands really on the controls of a spaceship? According to the late Erich Von Daniken, in his book, "Chariots of the Gods", the answer is, yes. Although his theory about this artifact (found in 1952) was popular at the early part of the space age in 1968, an understanding of the Maya language and culture reveals its true meaning. This 1/3 scale re-creation of the lid to King Pacal's sarcophagus depicts his mystical journey from this life. He is shown at the moment of death descending beneath the heavens, falling past the World Tree and into the jaws of the "Sun Monster", which will take him to the ancestral Otherworld. He is surrounded by skybands, (glyphs representing celestial objects) and other known icons from Maya tradition. Pacal ascended to the throne at Palenque at the age of twelve and ruled for sixty-eight years before his death in 683 A.D. He was instrumental in ushering the Maya into their golden age.
