This unusual Mayan/Olmec Hummingbird figure is cast from an original 2000 year old jade piece. While having a hummingbird's beak, the tufts and long head feather suggest a Macaw, while the multiple tail feathers are those of a bird of prey. This Bird Warrior may have been a protective amulet, with the all-seeing eye giving warning. Some feel it is a perforator, used to draw blood from the the tongue or the genitals as part of ritual blood-letting ceremonies. The tiny hummingbird was held in high esteem as a warrior because of its agility and the fierceness with which it defends its nest against all intruders, regardless of size.
